Fourth Grade Proportions Project

The fourth graders began their Unit on Figure Drawing and started with observational drawing and human proportions.  After a discussion about observational drawing, they first drew the wooden figure in their sketchbooks, without any guidelines or limitations.  I wanted to see how each student would approach this drawing.  For the most part, they started from top to bottom, carefully drawing each part of the body.  A few started from bottom to top or torso first, one student began with a continuous contour line, and one student used a ruler.

Next, we had a proportions lesson and learned how the average human body is about 8 head lengths long

We then painted in the negative space and left the positive space blank.  Next week, we will work on the positive space.
